Pandemic (H1N1)

Public health officials, who have long tracked the spread of influenza across Canada, have expanded their surveillance to include incidents of swine flu across the country in their weekly FluWatch reports.
Influenza levels across the country increased notably from Oct. 17 to 24, according to the latest report released by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The federal agency noted, however, that the intensity of the H1N1 pandemic was moderate, with 175 people sent to hospital and nine deaths reported during the week.
In the map below, we've charted the number of H1N1-related hospital admissions, ICU admissions, and deaths by province.

3 November 2009 -- According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the country has now recorded more than 250 000 cases of influenza-like illness, with 235 patients requiring intensive care. As of 2 November, 70 deaths from acute respiratory illness have been reported.

Washington, USA – Because of the rapid growth of the number of H1N1 influenza virus cases, US President Barack Obama has declared a national emergency.
“The 2009 H1N1 pandemic continues to evolve. The rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation, and the potential exists for the pandemic to overburden health care resources in some localities,” Obama said in a statement.
“Thus, in recognition of the continuing progression of the pandemic, and in further preparation as a nation, we are taking additional steps to facilitate our response.”
Through that, it permits US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius “to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements” to aid health care facilities perform immediate plans to deal with the pandemic.
When the H1N1 flu hit big time in April, millions of people in the United States have been infected, at least 20,000 have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
